I'm not a fan of squat toilets, and this in one in my relatives' house. It is kind of an outhouse on the roof of their building. Squat toilets seem to be very common in China. Even very nice looking restaurants may have squat toilets in the rest rooms.
The tiled tank on the roof (second photo) I think used to be used for water before running water was available "from the tap".
